Aka "Callie." This sweet girl takes tidbits carefully, never letting her teeth touch your fingers. No doggie smell! No doggie breath!</p>
Around September 1, 2020, this photo, which appeared on our online neighborhood network, appeared with a desperate plea of needing to rehome a niece's three-year old hound mix (b. August 19, 2017). She likely has Labrador Retriever in there, too:

The original owner was told that Callie is a <b><a href="https://thehappypuppysite.com/pocket-beagle/">Pocket Beagle</a></b>. Clearly, she is not! But she <u>was</u> very small when first adopted — because Callie was taken from her mama dog at 3.5 weeks:

And Callie is so strong! Until I got an <b><a href="https://www.amazon.com/PetSafe-Harness-Makers-Adjustable-No-Pull/dp/B071S2XZRW/ref=sr_1_8?crid=KQYMGOVVW9U5&dchild=1&keywords=easy+walk+harness+for+dogs&qid=1601234593&sprefix=easy+walk+h%2Caps%2C172&sr=8-8">Easy Walk Harness</a></b>, she was walking <u>me</u>! The third day of her trial run here, she suddenly lunged on the leash — so suddenly that she dragged me through one of our oak Adirondack chairs and across the front porch! The chair did not fare well; neither did I. My bruises and soreness are almost all gone now, though.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQ2S3W2TL0ySLFsqGAh0PSWzbW8-n5nwVlAlCCbMqXjvrs7qBN4QHKnaR0gDh-JvW6bWNQR4TJynga66OZjJozMB8hKbYF8dlM4qo8q6wyadZ-dMNEE2-NbO80qzZWgzNrRZmiQ0rtLvE/s2048/Adirondack+09-05-2020.jpg" style="display: block; padding: 1em 0px; text-align: center;"><img alt="" border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQ2S3W2TL0ySLFsqGAh0PSWzbW8-n5nwVlAlCCbMqXjvrs7qBN4QHKnaR0gDh-JvW6bWNQR4TJynga66OZjJozMB8hKbYF8dlM4qo8q6wyadZ-dMNEE2-NbO80qzZWgzNrRZmiQ0rtLvE/s400/Adirondack+09-05-2020.jpg" /></a></div><div><br /></div>
Worse: Callie has never been properly housebroken. I got some help from the owner's aunt, a dog expert, and from some reliable dog-training sites on the web, and have been working a plan (tether time, crate time, confined area, etc.). Housebreaking is coming along well.<div><br /></div><div>The saddest thing about this dog is that nobody picked up on her near-deafness! It's bad! I'm going to find out if I learned anything by studying the methods and triumphs of my role model, <b><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anne_Sullivan">Annie Sullivan</a></b>. Heh.</div><div><br /></div><div>I'm working on teaching Callie a few simple hand signals, and she's quickly learning them. My father used to say, "Hounds are either very smart or very stupid." Callie is smart! And she so wants to please, now that she's bonded with us.</div><div><br /></div><div>After the three-week trial period, we've decided to keep Callie. She has a tether and a zipline in the yard, and the doghouse is in place. She respects baby gates, so our kitties <b><a href="http://aowsphotos.blogspot.com/2018/06/minxy-has-grown-up-now.html">Amber and Minxy</a></b> have their catuary in the master bedroom. They watch Callie through the baby gate. Gradually introducing them is the best way.</div>

A red point <a href="https://www.pets4homes.co.uk/pet-advice/applehead-siamese-cats-what-are-they.html"><b>Applehead Siamese</b></a>, she was the cat of cats! Not an ounce overweight, she weighed 17 pounds and was, in the words of our vet, "robust and the biggest female I've ever seen." She even stalked deer! Totally bonded with us, Honey Bunny enjoyed road trips and spending the night in a motel or at my father's house.<br />

What of <a href="http://aowsphotos.blogspot.com/2012/10/best-friends.html"><b>Amber</b></a>? She's already accepted Minxy as a member of the family. Maybe because we lost Cameo and Mysti within the last seven months. The obvious fact that Amber has accepted Minxy: last night Amber deliberately left two pieces of kibble for Minxy. <a href="http://aowsphotos.blogspot.com/2017/04/goodbye-cameo.html"><b>Cameo</b></a> used to do the same for Amber.<br />

Need-to-know information....I paid my first visit to the kitten we're planning to adopt.<br />
<br />
She is the biggest female in the litter and obviously the alpha. In fact, she hissed at me and arched her back! None of the other kittens did so. In fact, they did the opposite and crawled all over me. She sat back and observed — and finally warmed up to me. On <b>her</b> terms. <br />
<br />
Reminder: <b><a href="http://www.dictionary.com/browse/minx?s=t">the definition of <i>minx</i></a></b>, of course. Mr. AOW and I welcome the challenge of sharing space with another alpha cat. <br />
<br />
Our <a href="http://aowsphotos.blogspot.com/2017/04/goodbye-cameo.html"><b>beloved Cameo</b></a> was an alpha cat from day one until her last moment.Always On Watchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08192688822955022541noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4344175837969868751.post-3745991894874164722017-10-09T13:12:00.004-04:002017-10-09T13:30:50.742-04:00Goodbye, Mysti (June 20, 1999-October 9, 2017)<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><b>Mysti in her prime</b></td></tr>
</tbody></table><br />
Mr. AOW and I will miss our beloved Mysti, whose mother disappeared when the litter was one day old. All the kittens in the litter were found by an animal rescue group and had to be bottle fed.<br />
<br />
But Mysti's rough start didn't end there. A few days after she arrived here as a young kitten in September 1997, she had a terrible case of <a href="http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=1+2122&aid=726"><b>coccidiosis</b></a>, which stunted her growh and left her with digestive difficulties. Several veterinarians didn't expect her to live past the age of ten. Mysti had other plans and fooled us all!<br />
<br />
Until aging interfered, Mysti, a dilute tortie, was our mighty huntress. She was probably proudest of one particular accomplishment: <a href="http://alwaysonwatch3.blogspot.com/2011/11/mighty-huntress.html"><b>catching and killing</b></a> a juvenile black rat snake in our basement back in November 2011. Of course, she brought her catch upstairs to display what she had snagged.<br />
<br />
Mysti had been coping with chronic renal failure for over two years and, although frail, was holding her own until the last few days, when she started refusing food. She even refused tuna! It wasn't the kidney disease that sealed Mysti's fate, however — it was oral cancer, the same affliction that <a href="http://aowsphotos.blogspot.com/2017/04/goodbye-cameo.html"><b>stole our beloved Cameo</b></a> from us on Easter Sunday 2017, less than six months ago.<br />
<br />
Mr. AOW and I consulted the veterinarian today and decided to do the kind thing — the last thing that we could do <b>for</b> Mysti.<br />

<br />
Jeff Jones, the founder and vice president of <i>Decorate A Vet</i> says when we thank him, "Gotta love the Christmas spirit!" And the expression on his face when he makes this statement is one of joy.<br />
<br />
As you'll see in the some of the photos below, the blessings we received from <i>Decorate A Vet</i> go far beyond decorating veterans' homes for Christmas. Permanent home improvements are made!<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
Home improvements here started five days before the official decoration day of December 7:<br />
<br />
I asked that <i>Decorate A Vet</i> fill with gravel a few holes at the point that our back yard (an area for parking our vehicles) and the paved street meet. Jeff said, "We can do better than that." We got a driveway — the first driveway we've ever had for this old house: <br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Two loads of gravel arrived.</td></tr>

<br />
We've long had a macadam area from the front gate to the back porch and the grill area. Over the years, however, weeds have sprung up on the macadam and turned it into soggy ground. I asked for <i>Decorate A Vet</i> to kill some of the weeds on the macadam. Jeff said, "We can do better than that." We got a scooter-way and a patio area:<br />

Cameo was the youngest cat in the household until <b><a href="http://aowsphotos.blogspot.com/2012/10/best-friends.html">Amber</a></b> arrived on September 13, 2012. Back row, from left to right: <span style="color: #b45f06;"><b>Cameo</b></span>, alpha cat of the household and surrogate mother to the new arrival in the basket; and <span style="color: #b45f06;"><b>Mysti</b></span>, still pouting a bit about the new arrival.<br />
<br />
In the front: <span style="color: #b45f06;"><b>Amber</b></span>, the sweetest of all torties, born on March 13, 2012, and still in her kittenhood. She tears around the house night and day as if possessed.<br />

<br />
Cameo, true to her Siamese heritage, is certainly the alpha cat in this household. Nevertheless, after several days of hissing and establishing the pecking order, Cameo has fully accepted Amber. <br />
<br />
<br />
Cameo and Amber first began to bond by playing with the new toy. They stayed on opposite sides of the Turbo Scratcher:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjt1Dq6SsNrAhMkVEVzbc_JbvkMrv0N09t2PxB3fEaup0uMozUrPFBkt6OxQXX1BqxNpZTACaWyCsV7RBcrN-v_hE59SSXnc4YJUl_Wr8tX8Q9rrEd8flab0_ru6T4yqC6HLOsFsIq1yPAJ/s1600/Amber+%2526+Cam+One_09.22.12.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjt1Dq6SsNrAhMkVEVzbc_JbvkMrv0N09t2PxB3fEaup0uMozUrPFBkt6OxQXX1BqxNpZTACaWyCsV7RBcrN-v_hE59SSXnc4YJUl_Wr8tX8Q9rrEd8flab0_ru6T4yqC6HLOsFsIq1yPAJ/s400/Amber+%2526+Cam+One_09.22.12.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<br />
A few days later, the two bonded. I managed to take a few photos of the two best friends sleeping on the cushion behind the recliner before <a href="http://alwaysonwatch3.blogspot.com/2012/10/a-personal-note.html"><b>Cameo got sick</b></a> on September 30:<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAoZWOCIOJDzDWpevmeuP5nE7KWTwF9FIc9DD_h9xBJd2zMNGLu9Cg6VYnncT-UuP6VASV0saL3ht8V0rnDxwieTuOXhRM2imOwyQPStImo68sKR7X3HQz6we3FL82mNP1IWLQodRpeFV_/s1600/Amber+sleeping+with+Cameo+1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAoZWOCIOJDzDWpevmeuP5nE7KWTwF9FIc9DD_h9xBJd2zMNGLu9Cg6VYnncT-UuP6VASV0saL3ht8V0rnDxwieTuOXhRM2imOwyQPStImo68sKR7X3HQz6we3FL82mNP1IWLQodRpeFV_/s400/Amber+sleeping+with+Cameo+1.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Mysti, also a tortie, is very jealous of Amber. I doubt that the two of them will ever bond. In the photo below, Mysti is furious that an interloper lives here now:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCSmUZm5QvWpkJwHNuTrr4gOrqL9BJSdrljYVQMeal1xffBnYfGyiKNj4x9nNtZ3DySaAbUDaC-f1EybgRCzMmlJXWCPrXOWBgXXeF5cULy7etE9f0mBkoC7wgIGkKjsab9YI8b96XAJia/s1600/Cats+002.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCSmUZm5QvWpkJwHNuTrr4gOrqL9BJSdrljYVQMeal1xffBnYfGyiKNj4x9nNtZ3DySaAbUDaC-f1EybgRCzMmlJXWCPrXOWBgXXeF5cULy7etE9f0mBkoC7wgIGkKjsab9YI8b96XAJia/s400/Cats+002.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
Fortunately, there is not an ounce of aggression in Mysti's body!<br />
<br />
<br />
Amber is very contented here in the AOW household and disregards Mysti's jealousy:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4H9o87cE4eIYppLMj-ffG4Ou3h-xEDWdFk3v-0Htl_AVgI7Bh3g2v2qDKaOUQe0ufTQNlC8D5pYRs7MHA45wgl9WvXHHcsY-HUJ220MwSYX0wAjuoomadJsDT9gvLJi98uqNKizwxsUY9/s1600/Amber+in+her+bed+3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4H9o87cE4eIYppLMj-ffG4Ou3h-xEDWdFk3v-0Htl_AVgI7Bh3g2v2qDKaOUQe0ufTQNlC8D5pYRs7MHA45wgl9WvXHHcsY-HUJ220MwSYX0wAjuoomadJsDT9gvLJi98uqNKizwxsUY9/s400/Amber+in+her+bed+3.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>Always On Watchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08192688822955022541noreply@blogger.com19tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4344175837969868751.post-75251815119525832782012-09-23T06:21:00.002-04:002012-09-23T15:12:36.598-04:00Amber Joins The Family<b>(I took the photos in this post from September 14-September 22)</b><br />

Without any hissing or growling, Amber and Cameo interact with the latest toy, the <a href="http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=11031608"><b>Turbo Scratcher</b></a>:<br />

Even before <b><a href="http://alwaysonwatch3.blogspot.com/2012/08/goodbye-dusti.html">the sudden loss of our beloved Dusti</a></b>, a dear friend had offered us the chance to adopt Amber, a <b><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tortoiseshell_cat">tortoiseshell</a></b> kitten about six months old. There was a several weeks' delay in adopting Amber because (1) she had to be FeLV and FIV tested first and (2) she had to undergo her free spay with the rescue group's veterinarian.<br />
<br />
We hope that some of the tortoiseshell <b><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tortoiseshell_cat#Folklore">folklore</a></b> is true!<br />
<blockquote><i>Cats of this coloration are believed to bring <b><a href="http://www.messybeast.com/folktails.htm">good luck</a></b> in the folklore of many cultures. In the United States, these are sometimes referred to as money cats.</i></blockquote><a href="http://cats.about.com/od/coatcolorpatternstypes/ss/tortoiseshell-cat-profile.htm"><b>Tortoiseshell Cats Profile (<i>New York Times</i>)</b></a><br />
<br />
Our other two cats, <a href="http://aowsphotos.blogspot.com/2007/06/our-cats.html"><b>Mysti</b></a> and <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghcLBz4dW8kTVKSTfObJSzrkDYzr7P3bems_Hf1-bMvPVbyTVvn6JoveR3rKJhaS9abkfJnNLwclQwje34bacXEpQ59hmJpaZjWak7OFVzcXUHDloDh_Ybz58hjhCiboDuNIlWgJZLpmAx/s1600-h/IMG_0180.JPG"><b>Cameo</b></a>, are seniors (age 13 and 11 respectively). We're hoping that Amber brings a new lease on life to our seniors. Maybe Cameo can even lose some weight with the extra exercise that a kitten brings to the mix!<br />
<br />
We haven't had a kitten in the house since 2001. I hope that Mr. AOW and I are up to the task!<br />
<br />

Via a personal email to me, my friend Tammy Swofford said the following about the photo immediately above:<br />
<blockquote><i>I swear, she has your personality. "Don't mess with me!"</i></blockquote><b><br />

The photo, which I call "Dusti Greets the December sunrise," was taken when she was quite young.<br />
<br />
Today, the vet found a tumor in Dusti's left kidney. This mass (not present two weeks ago), in combination with my beloved Dusti's recent dramatic weight loss (over 2.5 pounds since March to the point of emaciation) and a decline in general health over this summer, are almost always indicative cancer.<br />
<br />
She is the first pet that we've ever lost to cancer. <br />
<br />
Rather than subject Dusti to torturous procedures and the inevitable metastasis that rapidly follows no matter what, Mr. AOW and I opted for euthanasia, which the <a href="http://www.home-vet-care.com/"><b>home-care vet</b></a> did here in our living room.<br />
<br />
Dusti will be cremated today, and the ashes returned to us.<br />
<br />
I will miss Dusti so much! I will miss her trademark chirps and trademark tuck-and-rolls. Also, she was the only cat I ever had to talk with her tail. And I do mean talk! That tail of hers was so expressive.<br />

The house is so old and outmoded, without central air-conditioning and with only one bathroom, that developers considered the house a tear down. Once our sales contract fell through in September 2006, Mr. AOW and I decided that it was high time to stop living in a dump so bad that I don't even have many "before" photos. But I do have several "after" photos.<br /><br /><center><strong><span style="font-size:180%;">OUR NEW BATHROOM!</span></strong></center><br />In December 2006, we redid the bathroom, the most hideous and the most dangerous room in the house. The floor ominously creaked every time I stepped into the bathtub, and it was only a matter of time before I ended up, tub and all, in the crawlspace!<br /><br />Here's what the bathroom looks like now, complete with a window made of glass bricks and all new fixtures, including a bathtub with whirlpool jets. The walls are lavender, my favorite color:<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRDod38uwYpC3U1tcFRXZSNEPEm5UmIWAxLueT0cwC59cYD7wC28uW6SyT1IQdp5wwcq4Sg31Pesw2N_inogsiuQpCQgS075CDrLwT80tgW_isYZ4fn6QCgWy-y8UZO9HVC2I_uewS2kf3/s1600-h/IMG_0739.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5150162950308080402" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRDod38uwYpC3U1tcFRXZSNEPEm5UmIWAxLueT0cwC59cYD7wC28uW6SyT1IQdp5wwcq4Sg31Pesw2N_inogsiuQpCQgS075CDrLwT80tgW_isYZ4fn6QCgWy-y8UZO9HVC2I_uewS2kf3/s400/IMG_0739.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyo8PKl-U6qt_bS09ZTM9R0ty4XoELwfl4aXFNByteFCYFtnNcM1UCim-iO29P8Lv7gb4wAw2u2gzqodv99n3aBSfpCgk5XaNe0_j7VgRf7g_Re8ex36K53JXlUy0N8uzix_N9I6v5lmhN/s1600-h/IMG_0740.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5150163160761477922" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyo8PKl-U6qt_bS09ZTM9R0ty4XoELwfl4aXFNByteFCYFtnNcM1UCim-iO29P8Lv7gb4wAw2u2gzqodv99n3aBSfpCgk5XaNe0_j7VgRf7g_Re8ex36K53JXlUy0N8uzix_N9I6v5lmhN/s400/IMG_0740.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><br />Check out the medicine cabinet in the above photo: an authentic antique, with a black-walnut frame.<br /><br />Of course, once the bathroom was so lovely, we couldn't stand looking at the dining room, despite all the beautiful antiques therein. We converted the dining room into another kind of room.<br /><br /><center><strong><span style="font-size:180%;">MY NEW PIANO ROOM!</span></strong></center><br />In spring 2008 I bought and moved in a Yamaha upright, thus finally having a piano room, with gray walls and white trim:<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjF3f3j7jwHsCPGJghGQb4hRAqquqNtQzFAmZ-5bLQmp4wWDmlMIK-WuSjDUHgjxKxAcJCbGJNrGtuzEbtVC0IA_iuCpWS25arsSsporj4MFPvjs5jNziUyvx2JCoiDFb9h-xK2Qvgl9vnx/s1600-h/IMG_0734.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5150165630367673138" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjF3f3j7jwHsCPGJghGQb4hRAqquqNtQzFAmZ-5bLQmp4wWDmlMIK-WuSjDUHgjxKxAcJCbGJNrGtuzEbtVC0IA_iuCpWS25arsSsporj4MFPvjs5jNziUyvx2JCoiDFb9h-xK2Qvgl9vnx/s400/IMG_0734.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><br />In this photo, the piano is decorated for Christmas:<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPPLbA8ClHEjIaANJD-muR-fVzyLA_ddraPj0_OgRJsR8DJ3F89VwZNvUaajLDJ4377EwZnhC3W3RVgTca8sL-EDqpvjzSIinRaX72ysi0JKiqym8CxAFmHkBGAN7x97ZQ0RoI4gAdH6tu/s1600-h/IMG_0736.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5150166167238585154" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPPLbA8ClHEjIaANJD-muR-fVzyLA_ddraPj0_OgRJsR8DJ3F89VwZNvUaajLDJ4377EwZnhC3W3RVgTca8sL-EDqpvjzSIinRaX72ysi0JKiqym8CxAFmHkBGAN7x97ZQ0RoI4gAdH6tu/s400/IMG_0736.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><br />The "cat table" below is made of black walnut. My father cut the tree from his father's farm and milled the wood at this own sawmill, which Dad operated on Granddad's farm.
