The following are two of the sights on Dean Martin Boulevard (Route 7), as one first approaches Steubenville:
The house where Dean Martin was born is no longer standing, but the lot is marked:
Dean Martin's home church, the church at which he was christined, was St. Anthony's of Padua. In the left foreground of the second picture below, you can see just a portion of our Mustang GT convertible. The weather was perfect, and we had the top down the entire time we were in Steubenville.
Dean's home church today looks as it did when Dean was baptized:
One of the reasons that we went to Steubenville this year is that we knew that Tom Stevens would be appearing. Of course, there will never be another Dean Martin, but, in my opionion, Tom is the best of the Dean impersonators. Deana Martin herself says that her seeing Tom makes her do a doubletake:
You can learn more about Tom Stevens HERE.

Everybody loves somebody sometime.
Gotta love lyrics like that.
Cube,
See? I've got photos!
At some point I'll be posting some kitty pics.
What's with the burkha statue?
Burkha Statue? Looks like it doesn't it?
Dean Martin never recovered after his son died in a military plane crash.
Maybe they're casting a new spine for the Democratic Party?
It's not a burkha statue! In fact, I've never seen a Muslim in Steubenville.
The statue represents the steel-mill worker, who used to be the blue-collar backbone of the town.
For many years, there were few employment opportunities in Steubenville. One worked at the steel mill, ran bootleg whiskey, or dealt cards in one of the underground gambling houses, or worked in one of the nearby coal mines.
Thanks to our steel industry's being outsourced, today Steubenville is suffering from economic recession. The mill isn't operating full-out, and the train no longer runs 10 times a day, as it did as recently as 2002, when my husband and I last visited Steubenville. Lots of stores are now out of business and boarded up; others are for sale. Nearby Weirton and Wintersville are doing well, however.
Beak,
Dean Martin never recovered after his son died in a military plane crash.
No, he didn't. He was a broken man. HERE is an interview of Dean Martin speaking of his son's death.
Sinatra tried to bring him out of his depression by doing a performance tour with Sammy Davis, Jr., but Dean withdrew from the tour early on. So, Sinatra and Davis toured alone; they came here to D.C., and my husband and I attended the concert. Even with Davis suffering from the early stages of throat cancer (He didn't yet know it), he was one fantastic performer. "Mr. Bojangles" brought the house down.
Later, Liza Minelli joined the tour.
Farmer,
Steubenville is a Democratic town, but of the old type. That is, every event flies the flag and begins with the singing of our National Anthem.
Cats make great stewing meat.
I also recommend a light horseradish spread when using them as a sandwich meat.
Hey pallie AOW, thanks so much for usin' the Dinoblog for a Dinoreference....helpin' to spread the Dinomessage!!!
Duck,
Cats make great stewing meat.
So do Ducks.
I came to your pictures from the link over at the awesome ilovedinomartin blog. I had to check the Dino pics out since my pallie there made a mention of them. Those are some great pics. It looks like it was a fantastic event. I wish I had been there. At least for us Dino fans who weren't there, we get a chance to see some of what it was like. Glad you had a good time.
Boy that guy made me do a doubletake too. Looks just like him!
Edge,
He's even better in person because he's got the mannerisms and the voice mastered. As I may have mentioned before, even Dean Martin's daughter can't get over the resemblance.
People flock to Steubenville just to see this particular impersonator. I hear that he plays Vegas too.
